Public Safety

  • In July of 2021, my office was awarded the prestigious honor of winning the Triple Crown award at the National Sheriff's Association annual conference in Phoenix, AZ. We are the first Sheriff's Office to receive triple crown accreditation under four straight Sheriffs.

  • Full implementation of an internal co-responder mental health unit.

  • Creation of a special response team to address specific areas of criminal activity within the county.

  • The re-organization of a special investigations unit. Combined our narcotics unit and special investigations unit (Vice) to create a more collaborative effort to address street-level crime.

  • Expanded School Resource Officer (SRO) program to include a therapy dog in partnership with Littleton Public Schools. SRO expansion into three high schools within the City of Aurora.

  • High retention rate for highly trained professional law enforcement staff. Less than 5% vacancy within public safety staff.

  • Construction of a brand new, stand-alone 24/7 emergency operation center. This has been instrumental in addressing COVID-19 throughout the county, and has been fully functional and operational during the pandemic.

  • The emergency operation center has not only benefited Arapahoe County, but all of our municipal partners, with the distribution of resources from the Strategic National Reserve. We have distributed approximately 2 million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • All deputies carry naloxone (Narcan) to combat the opioid crisis plaguing our nation and communities.

Detentions

  • Expansion of our Medicated Assisted Treatment (MAT) program to include not only the continuation of the program, but induction of new detainees into the program through the approval of an on-site physician. Previous MAT program participants would be kept on medication, but now we can initiate first steps of treatment on new patients in our custody.

  • New partnership with the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition for in-person voter registration and in-person voting for all qualifying individuals in custody.

  • Successful management of COVID-19 in our detention facility through forward-thinking processes and acceptance criteria. We successfully kept the community spread of COVID-19 out of the detention facility from March 2020 to December 2020.
